That aside, reboots do seem to be the in thing at the moment – and seeing as we live in a nostalgic age, it’s always great to see shows from your past returning to the TV screen. Assuming they don’t butcher them of course!
Now I watched a LOT of TV when I was growing up in the 80’s, and I like to think that some of the best cartoon’s came from there. Not that there aren’t any cool cartoons these days – far from it. But the 80’s cartoons had a certain charm to them – and in some cases a darkness that some cartoons don’t have these days, outside of Adult Swim of course! So I wracked my memory for shows that I would LOVE to see have a comeback in some way!
This is my pick for the Top Five Cartoons that I would LOVE to see rebooted in some way. This might be an obscure list, but these were all shows I watched growing up and think it would be awesome if they came back! So here they are, in no particular order. Most of these are from the 80’s but I put some 90’s ones in there where appropriate.
What do you mean it was a show for girls? Hey! I know LOADS of guys that watched this show – if only for She-Ra herself. Um… yeah.
She-Ra: Princess of Power was a companion show to He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, in an attempt to get more female viewers. She-Ra was He-Man’s sister and she would fight against the Evil Horde, facing off against the leader Hordak on more than one occasion. Like He-Man, it was pretty silly and at times “girly”, but I still thought it was awesome! I always thought She-Ra is one of the most underappreciated heroines of all time.
Considering He-Man got a rebooted series in 2002 – which was actually pretty damn good – I see no reason why She-Ra can’t have her own series. Heck, with shows like Supergirl and Jessica Jones doing the rounds and the hype over the new Wonder Woman trailer, I think the world is ready for more ass-kicking females. So why not give She-Ra her own film or TV series? You can easily adapt it to make it darker and less girly – heck in the original show, She-Ra (or Adora as was her alter ego) was originally a soldier for the Horde until she realised her true origins. So you could make it that She-Ra is an assassin for the Horde and she becomes a heroine to redeem herself.
There is tons of scope to reboot this series AND make it accessible to both male and female audiences. I even know who could play She-Ra – Hayley Atwell! Come on, she’d be PERFECT!
Tell the truth, I’d just think it would be great to see She-Ra on the screen again. Hopefully it will happen one day. And hey, if any Hollywood filmmakers want any help writing a script, I’ll happily chip in! HINT HINT!!!
Set in a science-fiction setting, Ulysses rescues his son from a giant robot Cyclops and he and his companions escape to try and find a way back to Earth. However, the Gods are naturally pissed at this and curse Ulysses that his crew will remain lifeless until they get home. And then they have to try and find their home through deep space, fighting off all manner of Greek inspired monsters.
It’s a fun series and really brings the stories of Greek Mythology to life in a unique way. The only problem was that it DID suffer from terrible voice acting and a large number of the sound effects were ripped from Star Wars. But, given the advances in technology and writing, I’m sure this could be made into an awesome show. After all, what better material to adapt from than Greek Mythology? I’d love the idea of seeing Ulysses fighting a cyborg minotaur for instance!
Oh and a perfect casting choice for Ulysses? Liam Neeson! If the remake of Clash of the Titans showed us anything it’s that he can sport a badass beard! And he’s also a badass fighter! This is one show begging for a J.J. Abrams update and I’ll be happy with that!
So the basic plot, from what I remember, was that it was set after some cataclysmic event (like all good sci-fi’s) and there’s a group that goes out to do… something. They are joined by badass gladiator Spartakus (based on the real life gladiator) and they fight monsters and evil pirates alike.
What makes this especially memorable for me was when the pirates broke into song. It was kind a theme for them. And whilst it is pretty cheesy by todays standards, it was fun introducing the villains of the show in song form. Personally I think that every major villain team needs a theme song!
So… given that this show is so obscure, I dunno if we’ll ever get a remake of it. But if given the chance, they could make a pretty interesting show. Perhaps Game of Thrones writer D.B Weiss could do something with this. Maybe update it for a more “mature” audience. Not to go overboard of course, but just to see what they can do.
Plus it would be nice to see one of the lesser known shows get the attention they deserve.
Best TV theme ever!
One of my favourite shows growing up (and actually one of my favourite toy collections), it was a story set in a sci-fi environment where animals ruled – called the Aniverse. Here, the evil Toad empire was set to rule the world – but Captain Bucky O’ Hare and his crew were on hand to put a stop to it! With a cast of characters that included Deadeye Duck (with his pirate like voice), Bruiser the Berserker Baboon and magical cat Jenny – who was extremely popular with the furry community. Don’t ask – it was a full on ride of a show, packed with action and explosions.
Strangely enough, despite only running for a short period of time (I believe they only did about 20 episodes or so), it still has a pretty strong fanbase to this time. Obviously at the time it was competing against shows like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but I think Bucky O’ Hare stood out on it’s own.
Updating it wouldn’t be too difficult as it pretty much is already made as a kids show already. Maybe they could do it as an animated TV series and follow a similar plot to how the original was. It wasn’t a show that was big on story, and probably more style over substance – but what style!
All I would say that if they did update it – they had better not mess with the theme song! That is the one thing that should remain as it is! But otherwise, I’d love the idea of this show being on the TV again. Now if you’re excuse me, I need to try and get the theme song out of my head!
One of the lesser known Hanna-Barbera classics, Space Ghost was a superhero that fought intergalactic criminals, rogue mutants and vicious criminals. With powers including fight, super strength and energy blasts, he was a pretty lethal force against evil.
What I remember about Space Ghost when I was younger was how dark it was. For example, villains actually DIED in this show. Most of the time, they would fall afoul of some crazy over the top death and Space Ghost – contrary to most heroes – would quite happily leave them to their fate. It made Space Ghost a pretty vicious hero and one that you wouldn’t want to mess with.
With that in mind, and given how popular superheroes are at the moment, I think it would be great to see this show back. They could really make it a darker superhero drama – in the vein of Marvel’s DareDevil. Come to think of it, Netflix could be a good platform for it.
In fact, now I think about it – ALL the above could quite easily work on networks like Netflix or Amazon Prime or any other sort of online TV channel. Even YouTube! Seeing how popular those websites are, these could be great platforms to bring the shows of the past to a newer audience!
What other shows do you think deserve a comeback? Let me know in the comments below!
